When I went to the Louvre in 2015, this was one of my must-see pieces! The love story of Akhenaten ๐๐๐๐ณ๐ ๐๐ and Nefertiti ๐ค๐๐๐๐ has always fascinated me . This painted limestone ๐๐๐๐ statue ๐๐ ฑ๐๐พ reminds me of the popular โcouples statues,โ which depict a husband and wife sitting together, that were prominent in burials during the Old Kingdom!

Nefertiti ๐ค๐๐๐๐ was the โGreat Royal Wife ๐๐๐๐๐ จโ of Akhenaten ๐๐๐๐ณ๐ ๐๐. This statue depicts Nefertiti ๐ค๐๐๐๐ (left) and Akhenaten ๐๐๐๐ณ๐ ๐๐ (right) holding hands and walking forward. We know they are walking forward because one foot is placed in front of the other.ย
Letโs talk about their clothing! They both have sandals ๐ฟ๐๐๐ธ๐ช on their feet and wearing broad collars ๐ ฑ๐ด๐๐บ๐๐ฆ, the necklace ๐ ๐๐๐๐ง of choice for royals and the gods ๐น๐น๐น. Akhenaten ๐๐๐๐ณ๐ ๐๐ is also wearing the blue Khepresh crown ๐ฃ๐๐๐ on his head, while Nefertiti appears to be wearing what looks like the red crown ๐ง๐๐๐๐, but there is blue ๐๐น๐๐ฟ๐ธ๐ฅ paint ๐จ๐๐ ฑ๐ญ๐ธ๐ฆ on it! . The Uraeus ๐๐๐๐๐ is still present on the front of both crowns!ย
What was the purpose of this statue ๐๐ ฑ๐๐พ? This most likely came from a private home, where it was used in a shrine ๐๐๐ ๐๐ to worship ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ข Akhenaten ๐๐๐๐ณ๐ ๐๐ and Nefertiti ๐ค๐๐๐๐. The common people would worship Akhenaten ๐๐๐๐ณ๐ ๐๐ and Nefertiti ๐ค๐๐๐๐ because they were thought to be manifestations ๐ฃ๐ฃ๐ฃ of the Aten ๐๐๐๐ณ here on Earth.ย
The typical Amarna-style (elongated faces and limbs, more body fat in the stomach and thighs) is present here, which makes it very easy to identify these figures as Nefertiti ๐ค๐๐๐๐ and Akhenaten ๐๐๐๐ณ๐ ๐๐. The Amarna art revolution is so interesting because Egyptian art didnโt change much until Akhenatenโs ๐๐๐๐ณ๐ ๐๐ rule, then there was this drastic change, and then once Akhenaten ๐๐๐๐ณ๐ ๐๐ died, the ancient Egyptians ๐๐๐๐๐ช reverted back to the traditional art style and it stated that way for the rest of the civilization.ย
