Happy Motherโs ๐ ๐๐ Day to all of the moms โ and especially to my Mom, Nonna, and Oma! Today ๐๐๐๐ณ Iโm going to do a post about some of the Moms ๐ ๐๐๐ช of Ancient Egypt ๐๐ ๐๐ who happen to be goddesses ๐น๐น๐น๐!ย

The first ๐ picture ๐๐ ฑ๐ shows a calcite ๐ฑ and bronze ๐๐ค๐๐ฆ statue ๐๐๐๐ญ๐พ of Isis ๐จ๐๐ฅ feeding Horus ๐ ๐ญ. This is one of the most popular images ๐๐ ฑ๐๐ฆ of the Third Intermediate Period, Late Period and even through the Ptolemaic and Roman Periods.ย This image ๐๐ ฑ๐ has even appeared on the back of Roman Coins!ย
Symbolically, Isis ๐จ๐๐ฅ was thought to be the mother ๐ ๐๐ of the pharaoh ๐๐ป, and was often associated with motherhood, the protection of women ๐๐๐๐๐, and she was also a user of magic ๐๐๐ฟ๐.

The second picture ๐๐ ฑ๐ shows the goddess ๐น๐ Mut ๐๐ ๐ whose name ๐๐ happens to mean โMother!โ Symbolically, Mut ๐๐ ๐ was also thought to be the divine mother ๐ ๐๐ of the pharaoh ๐๐ป, and this idea became popularized as Amun ๐๐ ๐๐ญ (her husband) became one of the most worshipped ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ข gods ๐น๐น๐น during the 18th Dynasty.ย Mut ๐๐ ๐ didnโt appear in religious texts until the Middle Kingdom, and some think she was โinventedโ to be Amunโs ๐๐ ๐๐ญ wife and a mother ๐ ๐๐ figure.ย
The word for โmother ๐ ๐๐/๐ ๐โ in Middle Egyptian seems to predate the appearance of the goddess ๐น๐ Mut ๐๐ ๐, so itโs possible that her name ๐๐ was intended to mean โmother.โ
There are multiple variants for โmotherโ in Middle Egyptian/hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช, so letโs take a look at them:

Happy Motherโs Day!
